Acap asked me to write a comment about a talk regarding Islam in Turkey and i agreed to write him one...well,in a way i was kinda forced to write one coz he use the word 'wajib'...tak guna acap..LOL..but regardless of my previous statement, the i've always had the thought of writing something on it as i find it very...interesting and modern i should say...Acap's request just hasten the process so...here goes...:
I feel the "Turkish Experience " talk given by the speaker Mustapha Akyol is interesting and refreshing as it approach a few issues that has religious significant such as economic issue and the government of a state in a modern perspective, something that i believe is important because as human civilization continue to evolve, i believe some of the religious interpretation should adapt as well, i quote "...even the Quran needs a human agent..." and the way he explain his view is convincing and sensible in my opinion. This is in no way means we are changing the content of the religion itself because some issues are open for interpretation and my personal view regarding this view of his is that probably Rasulullah S.A.W is the last prophet is because the Quran is complete and Allah has entrusted us to intepretate the Quran based on our views and based on the Quran as well as the teachings of Rasullulah in his life time. Another part of his talk that i find important is his effort in dispelling the general misconception and introducing his own idea of secular government and capitalism. He introduced the idea of secular government as not a government which totally seperate religion from normal daily life but instead a government which practice freedom in religious practice and based everyday life administration on the common ground between the different group in society such as civil law, and the religious law is only applicable on certain issues which involve the same group of people only.In a sense, our own malaysian governent is a good example of his idea on secular government. He even proposed the idea that the Medina Constitution is a form of a secular government...and how bout that for a controversial idea, but he explained how that when the constitution first agreed, it is a form of a common law encompassing all the people in Medina, including the Jews and at that point Medina is not considered as an Islamic state.Only after the Uhud battle where the Jews help the Makkah people against the prophet that they are driven out of Medina and Medina become an Islamic state because only Muslims left in Medina.Rather than driven out on a religious basis, the Jews and other non-muslim people are driven out because of treason against the Medina government.Another important issue that he discussed during the talk was the issue on apostasy. He proposed the law on apostasy should be revised thoroughly, especially on the death sentence against apostasy because he argued such law never exercised during the prophet's lifetime and it only started during the Caliph Ar-Rasyidin era. And he believed that the Caliphs of that era reacted as such because the those who commits apostasy has committed treason as well and pose danger against the government and not because of the act of apostasy itself. The speaker believes that freedom of religion and freedom of making mistakes are the rights Allah has given to us humans and if some of us do make that mistake it is up to rest of us to try and show them the right path but if he or she still doesn't repent that it is their choice.
That's all that i want to comment about the "Turkish Experience" talk which i would like to say again is a very interesting and refreshing.Last but not least i would like to say that this is just my personal view regarding few issues about our religion based the talk.
It's much easier to give advice to others rather than to your own ego, so don't be scared to get someone to give u advice as that's a real strength, admitting our own weakness
